Hurricon 2019 – Cruel Seas

I suppose it’s inevitable really, but one thing I always seem to do at conventions is find one or two new games that I try out, and really like.

Fortunately, the deal with Jean was that if I sold some stuff, I could buy some stuff, so at Recon, I parted ways with a ton of stuff, and dropped some of the takings on the Cruel Seas starter and a few other bits and pieces.

A Summer of painting, plotting, and actually getting people to play the game resulted in my running ‘Across the Narrow Sea’, a home brewed scenario of an escorted German convoy being ambushed by a force of Vospers and Fairmile D boats.

Perhaps it was the timing (Friday night), but it wasn’t the best attended game, but it ran well. It also drew in some onlookers, and I’m pleased to say that onlookers and at least one player went on to buy starters and fleet packs of their own. In the end, it’s a good looking game, that with a little tweaking of the rules, runs well, and quickly.

For me, I will also say that Warlord have a great attitude to the game, and people using other manufacturers bits with the game. There’s a considerable market in 3d printer files out there, and I’ve picked up a few and had them printed. Take a look at Wargaming3d and Thingiverse, and see what you can find! I’ve got a few freighters from those files, and have even converted some of them to Auxiliary ships with the rather spiffy weapons packs Warlord have put out.

Of course, with Recon in Spring having a theme of Seven Seas, I’m going to have to run something again…
